Muller Family History in South Africa
Hillegert Muller (born 1695) married Margaretha Albertha (born 1695) about 1718. They lived in Merscheid in Keulen, Germany.
They had one son, Antonie Michiel Muller (born in 1719 in Kuilsland, Holland) who arrived in South Africa in 1735. He became a soldier, and in 1745 a free burgher. On the 4th of May 1746 he married Adriana van Rooyen (born 1728, daughter of Gerrit and Jacomina van Deventer) in Roodezand, Tulbagh. He passed away on 19 July 1768 on his farm Zeekoeigat, Swellendam.
His second son, Cornelius Johannes Muller (born 10 Sept 1748) married Suzanna Elizabeth (daughter of Ignatio Leopold Ferreira and Martha Terblanche) on 18 March 1770. They named their second son Ignatius Johannes.
{Ignatio Leopold Ferreira was born in 1696 in Lissabon, Portugal. He traveled as a sailor on the warship Sarpine from Portugal to Japan. Around the Cape of Storms on 16/17 June 1722, his ship sank and he arrived in Cape Town. He stayed and became a soldier in the service of the Holland's Oos-Indiesche Kompanje. He married Martha Terblanche on 6 November 1735. She was the daughter of Ettiene Terblanche and Martha le Febre (married on the 3rd of December 1713}
Ignatius Johannes Muller was baptized 23 October 1772 in Uitenhage. He took part in the Grosvenor Expedition of 1790/1. On 4 October 1792 he married Margaretha Louisa van Niekerk (1763 - 1822), daughter of Petrus van Niekerk and Maria Taillefer (widow of Ignatius Marthinus Ferreira). He participated in the frontier wars of 1799 - 1802 and 1811 - 12. During 1803 he accompanied J C L Alberti on the negotiations with the Xhosas. That same year he became the field cornet of the Lower Sondag's River ward. When the Drostdy was build at Uitenhage in 1805 he became the heemraad. Later he was appointed field commandant of Uitenhage.He was given the Farm “Klaaskraal” for his contribution in the wars. In November 1915 he took over the duties of the landdrost. The judges of the circuit court commended him. As a widower he married Isabella Elizabeth Vogel (1782 - 21.11.1834), daughter of Jan Christiaan and Jacomina (Potgieter) Vogel. He died 20 September 1834 in the Uitenhage district. They had three sons and three daughters.
His second child Cornelis Johannis Muller (oldest son) was born on 21 November 1795. He married Susanna Magdelina Botha.
His son Ignatius Johannes was born 15 September 1820. He married Hester Johanna Vermaak (*12.5.1826, baptized 25.6.1826, died 06.09.1885) in Uitenhage on 3 December 1844. She was the daughter of Jacobus Stephanus Vermaak and Aletta Jacomina Potgieter. They had six children. Ignatius died at the age of 44.
Their second child (oldest son), Cornelius Johannes Michael Muller was born on the farm Elandsriver in the Uitenhage district in 1847. He became a transport driver and transported goods from Port Elizabeth to the Kimberley diamond mines. He married Louisa Josina Terblanche (born 14 August 1846, baptized 29 November 1946) on 5th March 1877. They were both 29 when they got married. Her parents were Hendrik Jacob Terblanche and Louisa Josina Hartman (they got married in 1842). Cornelius' and Josina's children were born along the way as they transported goods to the diamond fields in Kimberley. They later settled on the farm Elandsheuwel in the Klerksdorp district. Cornelius died 12 February 1910 and Louisa died at the ripe old age of 85.
Ignatius Johannes Jakobus Muller, eldest son of Cornelius and Josina, was born 13 January 1879. He was born on the way to Kimberley and baptized in Middelburg (Cape Province) on 25 May 1879. His brother Peter John was also born along the way and was baptized in Kimberley. Both brothers fought in the Boer war as Cape Rebels. Natie (Ignatius) was one of Paul Kruger's bodyguards. After the war both worked for the Railways. Later Natie became a farmer. Peter John became the mayor of Klerksdorp in 1955. Natie married Hester Maria Naude in 1913 (born 22 September 1892, daughter of Burgert and Emmerentia Naude from Ventersdorp). He died at the ripe age of 86 years and 6 months.
Ignatius Johannes (Ike) was born on the 4th of November 1919 in Klerksdorp. He was the only son and got married at the age of 29 to Engela Wilhelmina (Greyling) from Winsorten. As a young man he worked on the mines, which he disliked tremendously. He liked rugby and played for Klerdorp's team as scrumhalf. He farmed near Kimberley but droughts forced him to sell out they moved to Pretoria in 1966. There he worked for the government. He died in a car accident on 13 March 1970. Engela Wilhelmina was born on 3 July 1922. When she was 13 her mother died and she took the household over. When she married my father she stayed a housewife. She died after a short sickbed 24 October 1989. All three children survived them. My mother, Engela Wilhelmina, was the second youngest of 9 children. Her parents Carl David Greyling and Christina Johanna Susanna (Pretorius) lived in Delportshoop. Carl was born 26 November 1877 in Ladybrand in the Free State. He was baptized in the Reformed church of Postmansburg when he was 7 years old. He became a delver on the diggings near Kimberley. During 1947 when King George visited South Africa, he gave him a diamond the size of a dove's egg. He was thanked from the palace by letter. His wife Christina was born 23 February 1877 in Fauresmith in the Free State. She was baptized within a week of Peter John Muller in the same church in Kimberley. Carl's ancestor was Johann Greyling from Linz in Sakse (Germany). hann arrived here in 1725 as a soldier. He later became a builder.
Ike and Dingie had three children, Christina, Ignatius Johannes Jacobus (Igno) and Carl, the youngest.
I was born 26 December 1955 in Jan Kempdorp, Cape Provice. I married Marthie Neethling on the 15th of November 1986 in Pretoria. We have 3 children. Ben-David was born on 4 August 1988. Mieneke was born on the 8th of October 1990 and Carla on 21st of June 1993.
